Call to Worship

Psalm 124:8;
2 Corinthians 13:14

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Our help is in the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Amen!

Prayer of Adoration

We praise you, O God;
we acclaim you as Lord;
all creation worships you,
the Father everlasting.
To you all angels and all the heavenly powers cry aloud;
the cherubim and seraphim sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles, praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets, praise you.
The white-robed army of martyrs, praise you.
Throughout the world the holy church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded;
your true and only Son, worthy of all praise;
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the King of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
When you took our flesh to set us free,
you humbly chose the virgin’s womb.
You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.
We believe that you will come to be our judge.

Come, then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Assurance

Call to Confession 1 John 1:8-9

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins before almighty God.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you
with our whole heart and mind and strength.
We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be,
so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name.
Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon Romans 8:34; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Hear the good news!

Who is in a position to condemn?

Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us,
Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us.
In Christ, you are forgiven.
The old life has gone;
a new life has begun.

May the God of mercy,
who forgives you all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness,
and, by the power of the Holy Spirit,
keep you in eternal life.

The Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

Word

Prayer for Illumination

Our Lord and our God,
now as we hear your Word, fill us with your Spirit.
Soften our hearts that we may delight in your presence.
Sharpen our minds that we may discern your truth.
Shape our wills that we may desire your ways.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Scripture Reading

Exodus 3:13-15

3 13 But Moses said to God, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” He said further, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’:

This is my name forever,
and this my title for all generations.

Philippians 2:5-11

2 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God,
    did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
    taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8     he humbled himself
    and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him
    and gave him the name
    that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
    to the glory of God the Father.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon

Hallowed Be Your Name

Response

Song

Last week, we sang “He Knows My Name” in response to hearing the good news of the invocation of the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father in heaven”). This week, after hearing the prayer’s first petition (“Hallowed be your name”) we respond by magnifying God’s name. We invite you to listen and reflect on the words of this song, and join in as you learn the tune.

Prayers of the People

As we come together to join Christ’s own prayer on our behalf, let us begin by using the words he gave us to pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
Amen.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, we come to you interceding for your church.

We want to bear your Name rightly in the world. But the pressures of our three enemies—the devil, the world, and the flesh—are ever present, seeking to conform us into their likeness. Where we are unholy, make us holy. In how we work, in how we rest, in how we play, make us holy. In how we use our bodies, our money, and our speech, make us holy. In our public life together, and our private life alone, make us holy. For all those here this morning fighting a losing battle with sin, for all those here this morning who cannot see their sin, make us holy.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, we come to you interceding for our world.

Where your name has been blasphemed among the nations because of your church, we ask forgiveness. And where your church has borne your name well, but the nations still stand opposed, we ask for conviction, repentance, and faith. We ask for Pentecost. Draw the nations to yourself, so that the peoples may praise you.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, we come to you interceding for the specific requests of this congregation.

We ask for Ed Koops, and healing in his intestine; for Don & Henrietta DeKoster and Mitzi Bonzelaar, in their transition out of home and into Appledorn; for Doug Walters, we thank you for successful surgery yesterday, and ask for his ongoing healing; and for Jeff and Sharon, we ask for your peace and wisdom as they support Doug; for Ryan & Bethany Wolter, as Bethany’s due date approaches—Lord, we ask for a safe delivery for Bethany and the baby; for Jonathan and Marian Cady, and the pressures that have increased on their work abroad over the past two months; and for our shut-ins: Elaine Bosch, Betty Westveld, Nancy Dykhuis, and Lloyd De Boer. Father, we ask your presence, your peace, and your Name to settle over all these our brothers and sisters.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, help us to really know you, to bless, worship, and praise you for all your works, and help us to direct all our living—what we think, say, and do—so that your name will never be blasphemed because of us but always honored and praised, through Christ the Son.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Amen.

God’s Parting Words

Numbers 6:24-27

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you
and be gracious unto you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you
and give you peace.

So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel,
and I will bless them.

Go in peace, as a people who bear God’s name,
so that all peoples may praise the name of Jesus. Amen.
